Etymology: Austrolethops: Composed from Austro = the south + Greek, lethe, -es = the river Lethe (Lethes odor), a river in Hades, the water of which produced in those who drank it forgetfulness of the past + Greek, ops = appearance; 1567 (Ref. 45335).

背棘 (總數): 6; 背的軟條 (總數): 14-15; 臀棘 0; 臀鰭軟條: 13 - 14. Brown in color; 1st dorsal fin dark; front of 2nd dorsal and anal fins pale, back part dark; caudal fin pale; pectoral fins light to dusky, with dark bar; pelvic fins black (Ref. 2798). Eyes small (Ref. 1602); characterized further by separated pelvic fins; completely absent scales on head and body; second dorsal and anal fins without spines; depth of body 4.5-4.9 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Lives among coral rubble.
