Etymology: Elassoma: Greek, elasson = smaller + Greek, soma = body (Ref. 45335); gilberti: In honor of Dr. Carter R. Gilbert, Curator of Fishes at the Florida Museum of Natural History from 1961-1998 and now Curator Emeritus. This name will stand in recognition of the many contributions Dr. Gilbert has made to the study of North American fishes.
