North America: Atlantic and Arctic basins from Quebec to Northwest Territories, Canada and south to St. Lawrence, Great Lakes, and upper Mississippi River basins in northern Ohio, Illinois, and Minnesota, USA. Introduced elsewhere. Considered conspecific with Coregonus autumnalis and Coregonus autumnalis pollan based on electrophoresis studies (Ref. 7506). Belongs to Coregonus artedi complex.

Inhabits open waters of lakes and large rivers, and also coastal waters of Hudson Bay (Ref. 9988, 86798). Nerito-pelagic species that feeds on plankton and large crustaceans (Ref. 58426). Utilized fresh, smoked, and frozen; can be steamed, fried, broiled, boiled, microwaved, and baked (Ref. 9988).
