Southeast Pacific and Southwest Atlantic: off southern Patagonia along the Argentine slope to 40°S and the Chilean coast to about 46°S. Southwest Pacific: on the rises to the east and south of New Zealand and off New South Wales and Tasmania in Australia.

Eye large, its diameter equal or greater than postorbital length of the head. Chin barbel present. Color pale pinkish; dorsal fin dusky distally; a dark spot at the tip of the first dorsal fin (Ref. 1371). Usually unpaired fins margined with black (Ref. 27363).
A benthic species found on the continental slope (Ref. 75154). Living from the inner shelf, in far southern South America, to depths beyond 1000 m.
