Etymology: Microcanthus: Greek, mikros = small + Greek akantha = thorn (Ref. 45335);  joyceae: Named for Joyce K. Allan, who provided Whitley with illustrations of this species for his original description; noun in the genitive case..

Dorsal spines (total): 11; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-17; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 13 - 14. This species is distinguished by the following: fifth body stripe relatively straight, without an inflection; no spots and short dashes on the breast and lower body (Ref. 123714).

Juveniles and young adults are often seen in rock pools and rocky shores to 5 meters. Adults are more commonly seen near rocky reefs, but are also common in harbours, embankments, and under piers, where they occur in large groups (Ref. 123714).
