Etymology: Owstonia: Named for Alan Owston (1853‒1915), an amateur naturalist, yachtsman and collector of Asian wildlife, notably fishes from Japan and China.;  contodon: Name is a combination of the Greek 'kontos' for short and 'odon' for tooth, referring to the peg-like symphyseal dentary teeth..

This species is distinguished by the following characters: LL pattern type 1; D IV,21-23; A II,16; oblique body scale rows in mid-lateral series 47-53; preopercle lower limb margin with about 8-11 spines; dark premaxillary stripe (119093).
