Definition of Term

oral incubation
(English) A form of parental care in which one parent (usually the male) carries the fertilized eggs in his mouth until they hatch. In reef fishes, only the cardinalfishes and pseudochromoids are known to brood their eggs in this fashion. Also known as mouth brooding, less aptly, oral gestation; e.g. certain Apogonidae, Ariidae.
