Definition of Term

aplesodic fin
(English) A pectoral, pelvic, dorsal, or anal fin in which the fin radial cartilages do not extend into the distal fin web and between the supporting ceratotrichia of the fin web. Modern sharks always have aplesodic caudal fins, in which the haemal arches of the caudal vertebrae do not support the ventral caudal lobe. (See also: caudal vertebrae, ceratotrichia)
