Type locality, Cape Wellington, Wilsons Promontory, Victoria, NMV A24972-001 (holotype of Optivus agastos, 9.03 cm SL). Restricted to SE Australia, between Noosa, Queensland in the north, Lord Howe Island to the east, Port Phillip Bay, Victoria to the west and Freycinet, Tasmania in the south, in the vicinity of reefs, 1-146 m (Ref. 76814).
