Remarks Serbian and Croatian It is always difficult to say to which fish from family Sciaenidae one name refers. Only the most experienced fishers don’t mix the Corvina nigra and Umbrina cirrosa (and even Argyrosomus regius- which is very, very rare). In the vernaculars, the bellow listed names often designate two, or even all three species [Vinja 1986, 31.0 ff.]. Here are all names recorded for Corvina nigra (CN) + Umbrina cirrosa (UC) (and Argyrosomus regius- AR): argo (UC), argan (UC), bradavièar (UC), dronj (UC), govno (UC), [grbiæ (UC)], hrb (CN), krb (AR), grb (AR, UC), [grb pravi (AR)], ham (AR), harba (UC), harbul (UC), hrb (UC), kaval (CN, UC), kavala (CN, UC), kavalin (CN), kavalo (CN), kon (CN), konj (CN, UC), krap (CN), koraf (UC), korba (UC) korbea (UC), korbel (UC), korbela (UC), korbet (UC), korbeto (UC) kordel (UC), koštaèa (UC), krap (UC), krap vodeni (UC), krb (UC), kurbej (UC), kurbeja (UC), kurbel (UC), kurbelj (UC), kurben (CN), kurber (CN), kurbeš (CN), kurbet (UC), kurijal (UC), kurjal (UC), kurjan (UC), kurjel (UC), lodo (UC), mesan (CN), [morski orao (AR)], ombla (CN), ombra (CN), ombrela (CN), orgo [?] (CN), pešikaval (CN), pešekavalo (UC), pešlavaè (CN), salamaun (UC), sokol (AR), som (UC), [sjenka (AR)], šalomun (UC), škrapan (CN), umbrela (UC), vrana [?] (UC) []- names that were not recorded by Vinja- they are usually obsolete or never used to be familiar to the vernaculars. The only genuine name for AR is hama (wrong identified in Vinja 1986 as Dentex gibbosus), which is used in Ulcinj. It’s a place in the South of Montenegro, the only one in Serbia and Montenegro and Croatia where AR is often and regular caught- at the mouth of Bojana River, near the Albanian border, so it’s no wonder that this name became the official name for AR [cf. 52801]. For etymology, see hama.
